Paintings by Caroline Mudge 4 – 31 March 2012

In this series of new works Caroline responds to the great fear of sinking into suburbia, being fenced in and rooted down to the spot.

The women, fueled by wanderlust contemplate escaping the daily grind and constraints of domestic life in suburbia but are held back by the deep love that binds them there.

Painted in her signature candy coloured palette, Caroline has juxtaposed kitsch icons and vintage oriental styled women on a canvas of old timber fence posts.

“The themes in my work usually have a strong emotional thread exploring the light and dark side of life often with a humorous bend or a narrative quality.”

“I also enjoy using recycled materials wherever possible in my work for the obvious environmental reasons and also to ensure that each piece is truly unique. My
Oriental/Japanese inspired women stem from my first travels to these countries which has left a lasting impression on me.”

This is the third solo show from the local artist. She has been exhibiting extensively in group shows both locally and nationally since 2006 and was featured in Yen magazine’s all female, Curvy exhibition 3 years running. This included being asked by Adidas to be one of 15 artists selected to customise a limited edition jacket.

OPENING LAUNCH 4th March – 4pm

Be a part of International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8th March each year, by attending Fenced Inand its opening event which will be officially launched by Ingrid Hoffman, Director of KickArts, followed onto Havana Music Cafe for entertainment provided by emerging singer song-writer Samantha Clark.

Samantha Clark was born in Papua New Guinea to an Australian father and a Trobriand Island mother. Most of her early years were spent with her mother’s people in the Trobriands where she was part of this rich and exciting culture. She has been singing and dancing since she could walk. At the age of 9 she began teaching herself guitar and at age 11, began writing her own songs both in English and the Trobriand Language. Samantha, who is a charismatic performer, has won a number of awards. She is passionate about music and wants to pursue a career in the music industry.

Havana Music Cafe is located at 113 Lake St. For table bookings, contact Havana at 4041 2266.

The sculptures reflect an intense relationship between the artist and the stone. Nature creates objects of such complexity, originality and beauty that the human mind is at loss to compete. The artist’s act of sculpting begins in the quarry, with the search for the right stone, the one holding in embryo the artist’s future creation. It is based on the reactions to the material he sculpts, originating by the fusion between the natural roughness of the stone and the polished body fragments surfacing from it.

“It is a work in process in the sense that it never really ends”. Every piece the artist will create an experiment; “when I begin, I don’t know where I am going, nor what it will become in the end. I can define my sculptures as unfinished inventories of fragments”. The work is improvisational sites in which the constructed and the unfinished represent the artist’s intuition and the force of nature and beauty. “I rely on the stones, the sensuality in their shapes, the elegance in their lines, I feel the power of their structure, and with my work, I sense I join the work of Nature, culminating in a natural fusion which enhances the sensuality on the stone by highlighting its natural contrasts”. Rainer H Schlüter, 2012.

Exhibition Opening “In the Backyard” by Anna Heraghty @ Cell Art Space, 4.00 – 5.00 pm Sunday 8th January 2012. 109 Lake Street, Cairns City Place.

Special guest Cr Margaret Cochrane will officially open the exhibition and then celebrations to follow at Havana Music Café. The First 10 people who attend the launch at Cell Art Space will receive a special complimentary gift if they purchase a main meal on the night.

The artist’s work was inspired by her own childhood backyard; complete with a Hill’s Hoist clothesline. Although she say’s it is really about any Australian backyard.

The birds are modeled on Anna’s pet cockatiels, which ranged free in her backyard.

The work is black and white, because people would expect it to be colourful and Anna likes to be different.

Anna can envisage her work in a shop window – at a baby shop, pet shop, Library, or any shop wishing to display an Australian backyard. It’s cool, Anna say’s, that her work will be on display over Australia Day.
